The Wakery, a late-night coffee shop and dry bar, to open on the Old State Capitol Plaza

The Wakery, a late-night coffee shop and dry bar planned for downtown Springfield, is moving closer to becoming a reality. Owner Elizabeth Wake said she’s signed a lease for 5 Old State Capitol Plaza, which previously housed Long Nine Junction.

The restaurant closed in February 2021 when owners Corey and Emily Faucon moved to Petersburg to take part in the renovation and reopening of the historic Broadgauge building.

“They left the space in great shape,” said Wake. “I’m mostly focused on creating the ambiance with new paint and décor.” However, she is planning to remove the long bar to open up more seating and redo the flooring in the 1,500-square-foot space.

A recently completed Kickstarter campaign raised nearly $11,000 to help with start-up costs, and a fundraiser is planned for Wednesday, Nov. 23, at the Pasfield House.

“The day before Thanksgiving is commonly known as blackout Wednesday; it’s a very heavy drinking night,” said Wake. “It’s nice to have a positive, alcohol-free alternative that is still really fun and a great excuse to go out with your friends and family.”

The $15 cover charge for the ”Wake Up Wednesday” event will include live music by The Lovelorn and performances from Vaudeville Valley Circus. “It will be the first taste of what The Wakery will offer,” said Wake, who noted that the drinks will be made-to order, just like in a traditional bar setting.

In the meantime, Wake has been offering pre-made bags of her specialty drinks at the Old Capitol Farmers market and said, “I’ve been selling out almost every week, even after buying a new fridge to hold more.”

Wake said she’s already been in contact with other area businesses about potential partnerships and plans to work with Elsie’s Bakehouse, Whimsy Tea and Custom Cup Coffee, in addition to sourcing honey from a local apiary. She plans to have the brick-and-mortar location open in the first quarter of 2023.
