A year after beginning construction, Springfield Gymnastics Center is preparing to move into a new facility on the west side that is nearly twice as large as its previous space.

Springfield Gymnastics Center opened in September 2017 at 3040 Hamlin Parkway, but temporarily relocated to the former Shop ‘n Save property on the corner of Wabash Avenue and Chatham Road last July while its new location was under construction. Joyner Construction Services was the general contractor for the 23,800-square-foot building at 3400 Gateway Dr.

"It's a huge building, and we have each of our programs divided out, separated by short walls,” said owner Brad Epperson. "Everything is going to be operated independently, so we won’t have to worry about scheduling conflicts and space conflicts.”

Epperson said that every program has a bag pit, which he described as a new concept for gymnastics.

“We’ll be able to offer things that we weren’t able to before – more classes, more trampolines, a better silks area, a bigger ninja area with new stuff,” he said. “It’s an amazing gym, and we’re just putting the finishing touches on it.”

Epperson previously told SBJ that one of the challenges with the initial location was that it was not built as a gym. It was originally an automotive repair shop and later used as a church. “There’s a benefit to good design,” he said.

Springfield Gymnastics Center has been closed since May 25 for the move and will reopen on Monday, July 7, with a noon ribbon cutting at the new location. Epperson said an open house is scheduled July 27 to kick off the fall session.

“We’re excited to get in there and get started,” he said.
