Fluorescent Reefs opens on West Jefferson

A unique retail business has recently transitioned from online-only to a brick-and-mortar location.

Fluorescent Reefs opened Aug. 14 at 615 W. Jefferson St., Suite B. “The store is brand-new,” said Dustin Shreves, who co-owns the business with his wife, Jen Shreves. “We were online for about three-and-a-half years; we sold coral on Instagram and also had a website. We had pretty good success doing that, so we decided to open up a retail store.”

Shreves said he plans to specialize in products that are not currently available in the Springfield area. “We’re trying to bring in the saltwater fish you don’t see every day around here,” he said. “Right now, you have to travel two, two-and-a-half hours to get a good coral and saltwater fish selection.”

The business came about because of Shreves’ own hobby, which he said started with freshwater fish before transitioning to saltwater. “I owned 22 tanks at one time. We just started whittling them down and getting bigger tanks,” he said.

Fluorescent Reefs is open Monday and Tuesday, 12-8 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 12-9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.- 7 p.m.
