John A. Scherschel, MD, has been named president of Prairie Cardiovascular in Springfield. Scherschel is the fourth president in the group’s 40-year history and succeeds Marc E. Shelton, MD, who was appointed vice president and chief physician executive of Hospital Sisters Health System in March.
Scherschel has served as a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist at Prairie since 2014, and he will continue seeing patients in a limited capacity.
“It has been a privilege to care for patients alongside the talented and committed providers and colleagues at Prairie,” said Scherschel. “The last five years have given me insight into this tremendous organization, and I am honored to take the lead and continue the tradition of providing world-class care to the residents of central and southern Illinois.”
Scherschel received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Ball State University and his doctor of medicine degree from Indiana University School of Medicine where he also did his internal medicine residency and later served as chief resident in medicine. He completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease and was a postdoctoral research fellow as well as a fellow in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology at Indiana University School of Medicine.
Scherschel is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and the American College of Cardiology where he sits on the Electrophysiology Council. He and his wife, Catherine, have three children, Elizabeth, Christopher and Caroline.
