The former Goodwill building on North 11th Street in Springfield is slated to become the new headquarters for a different nonprofit.
Capitol Reuse Center Inc. purchased the building at 815 N. 11th St. earlier this year for $15,000 and obtained a permit this week from the City of Springfield to remodel the building, which was in need of structural repairs.
The nonprofit was established in Springfield about three years ago and has outgrown its current location at 2310 E. Clearlake Ave., according to executive director Teresa Woodcock. She says Capitol Reuse Center will move to its new location in the spring.
The group is part of Indianapolis-based Youth Fair Chance Inc., a nonprofit which aims to "provide today's youth with a fair chance for a safer and more environmentally friendly future by eliminating usable building materials from landfills." Woodcock says vendors donate unneeded new building materials which would otherwise end up in dumps, and the nonprofit resells them while teaching young people about recycling. From the group's beginnings in Indianapolis in 1979, it has expanded with a facility in Cincinnati and smaller facilities in Springfield and Covington, Kentucky.
"We're kind of a pilot for smaller communities," Woodcock said.
Marx Fireplaces, Lighting & Outdoor Living also obtained a permit from the city this week for a construction project. Owner Mark Coates says the business is expanding with a new 9,000-square-foot warehouse at 3500 S. Sixth St., across from the current location. Coates says once the new building is complete in mid-November, inventory from the current building will be moved there to create more sales space.
"When the warehouse areas have been completely redone, we will have an additional area of 7,500 square feet that will be turned into showroom," he said.
Other building permits issued by the City of Springfield include the following:
Comcast obtained permits to renovate 3405 Freedom Drive, which will house the company's new Xfinity store. The project valuation is $325,000. Prairie Fire Sprinkler Inc. and King-Lar Company are the contractors.
Ginger Creek Farms Inc. obtained a permit to remodel 3330 Ginger Creek Drive, Suite B, which holds the Springfield office of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The contractor is Cloyd Builders, Inc.
JJ2 Properties LLC obtained a permit to remodel the mixed-use building at 501 W. Monroe St. The project valuation is $50,000, and JJ2 Properties is the contractor.
Samuel Nichols obtained a permit for electrical work at 3040 Hamlin Parkway, to split lease spaces. B & B Electrical Inc. is the contractor.
Albonese Development obtained a permit to remodel four floors of the Centrum Building at 319 E. Madison St., which will house the SIU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. B & B Electrical Inc. is the contractor.
