Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach, a medical supply and equipment recovery organization in Springfield, is supporting efforts to provide medical care to Jamaicans in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. A 40’ shipping container of requested medical supplies and beds left the Mission Outreach warehouse on Nov. 6 to be distributed by relief workers from Food
for the Poor.

“When tragic natural disasters strike, Mission Outreach works with established, on-ground
partners who know the immediate need and have the logistical ability to safely and
effectively distribute appropriate aid,” said Erica Smith, executive director. “We’re blessed
to work with organizations who provide help in an ethical manner. That’s vital, especially
with emergency response. The goal is to help people with efficiency, care, and respect.”

The shipment contains hospital beds and infection control materials such as protective
gowns, gloves, and eyewear. All materials shipped were requested directly by Food for the
Poor to prevent waste and promote the most efficient disaster response available. The
shipment sets a record at Mission Outreach for fastest time between ordering and shipping
– less than one week.

This is the second time since Hurricane Melissa struck that Mission Outreach has been
able to respond. Last week the organization contributed more than 4,000 diapers (adult
and infant) to a shipment organized by Midwest Mission.
