FreshHut opens at the corner of Wabash and Chatham

FreshHut has opened at the corner of Wabash Avenue and Chatham Road, specializing in shawarma, gyros, kebobs, wraps and wings.

The space at 3109 Chatham Road was home to Papa John’s for many years and most recently Wakamoles Mexican Grill, which closed earlier this year. FreshHut owner Amer Snober also owns California Kitchen, 1132 N. Ninth St., but said he was “trying to make a simple business” for his new restaurant venture.

“California Kitchen is the hugest menu you’ve ever seen – it’s a lot of work,” Snober said. “This one, I made the menu simple.”

The featured item is shawarma, a Middle Eastern dish that consists of meat cut into thin slices, stacked in an inverted cone and roasted on a slowly turning vertical rotisserie. “It’s freshly made, not frozen,” Snober said. “We use fresh meat that we marinade and season. It’s served with tahini sauce or a garlic sauce.”

Snober said FreshHut will offer shawarma in a variety of ways, such as wrapped in pita bread, served over rice or even over fries with cheese, horseshoe-style. “Or some people try to keep it healthy, so they might want shawarma on top of a salad,” he said.

FreshHut also offers wings in a variety of flavors, chicken nuggets and tenders, wraps, gyros and Italian beef sandwiches. Sides include fried mushrooms, fried pickles, fried okra, cheese curds and French fries ranging from traditional to Cajun ranch, buffalo chicken ranch and sweet potato fries.

Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
