Just over a year after it reopened under new ownership, the downtown Subway has closed again.

In March 2025, ECI Investments purchased six of the eight locations owned by longtime operator Vern Evans after he retired following 25 years in the central Illinois market. Four of those acquisitions were in Springfield: 607 E. Adams St. in downtown Springfield, plus 417 South Grand Ave. E., 2359 W. Monroe St. and 1827 W. Jefferson St.

That gave the Effingham-based franchisee a total of 45 Subway restaurants. Hannah Schumachert of ECI Investments told SBJ at the time that her father had started the business more than 30 years ago and she had been working full-time in the family business for 15 years.

The four Springfield stores closed temporarily during the transition, but the downtown Subway reopened later that same month, followed by the Monroe and Jefferson locations. Schumachert had told SBJ that the South Grand store would undergo renovations prior to reopening, but it remained closed.

Now a sign has appeared in the window of the 607 E. Adams St. store listing it as permanently closed and directing customers to visit the Monroe or Jefferson locations.

Schumachert did not respond to an inquiry from SBJ seeking additional information.
