City Water, Light and Power in cooperation with the Land of Lincoln Power Squadron and the Springfield Lake Shore Improvement Association is scheduling a Boat Operators Certification Clinic. One course to be held over three evening sessions will be offered at the CWLP's Property Management Center at 200 E. Lake Shore Drive, located east of the Spaulding Dam Boat Launch:

The free course is open to anyone 12 years or older and each participant who successfully completes the course will earn an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Watercraft Operators Certificate, which is required for those under age 18 operating a motorized watercraft solo on Illinois waterways. Course content includes: basic boat knowledge, equipment, navigation, safety on and in the water, emergency measures, and skipper's duties. Although is course is free, persons wishing to attend must pre-register by calling 494-8455. Space is limited. Children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants may bring snacks and drinks for breaks. This course is being held in addition to the Kwedar Safe Boating Clinics that are held each spring as a memorial to Melissa Kwedar, a Springfield teen who was killed in boating accident on White Lake near Waverly, Ohio in 1982.
