The former Tacology 201 space in the West Iles Business Center has been vacant since the popular Mexican restaurant closed its doors in June, but now a new venture is in the works to take its place.

Emanuel Lopez told SBJ he plans to open his first restaurant, Los Altos Cocina y Cantina, although he said he is no stranger to the industry.

“I grew up in the restaurant business,” Lopez said, “although this is my first venture. I’ve always been curious to do something with my own style.”

The Jacksonville native said he grew up working with his parents at their restaurant, Los Rancheros, and currently helps them with the Springfield location in Parkway Pointe as well. Los Rancheros also has locations in Taylorville, Petersburg, Mt. Sterling and Dekalb.

“I love this business; my father has been a great example for us,” Lopez said. “He taught us the way and grew the love for the restaurant business.”

Now, Lopez has signed a lease for 3266 W. Iles Ave. and is in the process of transforming the space.

“I think when people come in, they’re going to be surprised and say, ‘It’s a whole lot different than what I remember,’” he said.

Tacology 201 had operated from the west-side space since 2020 until owner James Hamilton announced June 30 he was leaving the restaurant business, citing his decision to “prioritize health and family.” Tacology initially opened in 2017 in downtown Springfield.

“We’re still going to offer traditional dishes, but we’ll give it our own style. We’ll have fresh, homemade tortillas, cocktails with fresh lime and agave,” Lopez said.

“It’s too soon to say for sure, but if everything goes well, I hope to be open by early November,” he said.
