William Krekel founded the Krekel’s brand back in 1949 on Eldorado Street in Decatur. His mission was simple – to provide delicious hamburgers and pair them with handmade milkshakes and French fries at family friendly prices. Krekel’s has now grown to seven locations throughout central Illinois. The current owner, Suzie Wichmann, is William Krekel’s granddaughter.
The Springfield Krekel’s location at 2121 N. Grand Avenue E. opened in 1993. Krekel burgers are made to order with fresh ground beef, seared thin and served on a toasted bun. The fries are always served hot and crispy, and the many flavors of frozen custard can be ordered as milkshakes, sundaes, concretes, specialty desserts and simple cones or cups.
The Springfield location is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
