“I’m an avid reader, and I love the library,” she said. “I was not actively looking (for employment), but a girlfriend of mine sent me the job listing.”

Shovlin said her love for libraries dates back to her childhood.

“I can remember getting my first library card as a kid and the first book I checked out with it,” she said. “My whole life, I’ve been a public library user. I’ve raised my kids in public libraries.”

Shovlin started with Lincoln Library earlier this month. Prior to that, she worked as the communications manager for The Autism Clinic at Hope and the Illinois Pork Producers Association.

Shovlin also spent two years as the program coordinator for Downtown Springfield, Inc.

“That was my first job after being a full-time, stay-at-home mom,” she said. “I love being back downtown.”

Shovlin noted that Lincoln Library offers programs for children, teens and adults and creates a sense of belonging for many people.

“The library is important to our community in ways that people don’t even realize,” she said.
