Mercury, a global, bipartisan public strategy firm, is opening an office in downtown Springfield at 235 S. Sixth St. The office at the northwest corner of Sixth and Monroe streets is the second Illinois location for the firm, which recently opened a Chicago branch office.
Former Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, who was born and raised in Springfield, leads Mercury’s team in Illinois. “Opening this Mercury office in Springfield is like a homecoming to me,” said Bustos, who is co-chair of Mercury Public Strategies in Washington, D.C., and runs its Midwestern operation. “As a native of Springfield, I am proud to open our office downtown, on the same street as Abraham Lincoln’s law office, and where he served in the Illinois state legislature. We are excited to be part of the community and appreciate the city of Springfield’s warm welcome as we grow our operation.”
Mercury-Illinois also includes Toi Hutchinson, former Illinois State Senator and senior adviser to Gov. JB Pritzker for cannabis control; Zach Koutsky, a longtime Democratic strategist and lobbyist with strong ties to organized labor; Nick Bustos, a former agriculture executive who has more than a decade of experience in politics, state government, business development, public relations, marketing and communications; and Michael Morthland, who previously served as assistant counsel to the Illinois Speaker of the House of Representatives and worked in Pritzker’s administration.
Mercury has expanded into the Midwest and recently hosted an open house for its new Chicago office, which joins U.S. offices in Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Montana, Texas and South Carolina. Mercury is part of the Omnicom Public Relations Group, a global collective of three worldwide public relations agencies and specialist agencies in areas including public affairs, language strategy, global health strategy and change management.
Mercury’s Illinois team will host a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, followed by an open house.
