The City of Springfield Office of Public Works removed trees along Monroe Street next to Lincoln Square Apartments today.
The trees were damaged from parasitic webworms and will be replaced, according to city arborist Jeffrey Reim.
Eight honey locust trees were cut down by city workers due to the worm infestation and concrete damage from the trees' root systems.
"The option of spraying them was out of the question because a boom would have to be used and the insecticide overspray would damage the building," Reim said.
He notes that trees in that environment are typically supposed to be removed and replaced about every eight years, but the trees which were cut down today were at least 15 years old.
Reim expects to replace the trees in spring with a different species.
