Walgreens is closing its location at 1310 S. Fifth St. in Springfield as of March 29, according to a sign posted on the door.

CVS closed its nearby store at 611 South Grand Ave. in February 2017.

Closures for both drugstore chains increased in 2022.

Walgreens had more than 8,800 stores as of October 2022, although that number is down from 2019 when the retailer announced plans to close 200 locations nationwide. In October, Walgreens announced additional closures were planned for stores in Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts and New York. No widespread closures have been announced for Illinois.

At the end of 2021, CVS announced it would be closing 300 locations each year for the next three years, citing “changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs.”

Walgreens currently operates nine other locations in Springfield: 2020 S. MacArthur Blvd, 2945 S. Sixth St., 3216 E. Clear Lake Ave., 2305 W. Monroe, 1900 W. Jefferson St., 2625 Stevenson Dr., 2140 N. Peoria Rd., 2500 S. Koke Mill Rd. and a location inside the Baylis building at Memorial Medical Center, in addition to stores in Sherman, Chatham and Jacksonville.
