The Crafted Stag Supply planned for west side

A new specialty business catering to men is in the works on Springfield’s west side.

The Crafted Stag Supply is the brainchild of Grant and Jennifer Hammer, who purchased the property at 3455 Freedom Dr. in May and hope to be open for business by spring 2024.

“It will be a men’s clothing and gift store,” said Grant Hammer. The business has applied for a zoning change to be allowed to sell alcohol, but Hammer said that will be a small part of the business model. “Someone might want to have a beer while they’re shopping, but we won’t sell food or really be a bar,” he said.

Approximately 6,000 square feet of the building will be devoted to retail space, while just under 1,400 square feet is intended to be a tavern area, plus an outdoor patio. Hammer said the tavern area may eventually include a barbershop as well.

The building has been vacant since June 2018 when Donnie B’s Comedy Club relocated and Westside Pub & Grill closed after nearly three years. It previously housed Ned Kelly’s Steakhouse, and later Albatross Bar and Grill.

The Springfield Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to vote Oct. 18 on the petition for a conditional permitted use to allow alcohol sales, which would then need to be approved by the Springfield City Council.
