The McDonald’s at the intersection of South Grand and Fifth Street will be permanently closing this weekend.
Sunday will be the last day of business for the fast-food restaurant at 501 S. Grand Ave. The decision to shutter the restaurant was prompted by a look at demand in the Springfield market, according to Caleb Canada, vice president of operations for Capital City McDonald’s, which owns the South Grand franchise.
“We’re just right-sizing in Springfield so we can do what’s best for the customers,” Canada said.
Following the closure, Capital City, which is owned by Mike Kasprzyk, will own and operate 15 McDonald’s restaurants in central Illinois, including 10 in Springfield and another five in Chatham, Jacksonville, Beardstown, Mt. Sterling and Havana.
A flyer posted at the South Grand restaurant earlier this week directed diners to visit the other McDonald’s locations on Sixth Street, West Jefferson and Clearlake Avenue after the Nov. 1 closing.
“It has been a joy to serve you at this location for decades,” the flyer said.
Canada said it will be “business as usual” at the other local McDonald’s. He said employees from the South Grand store have been offered jobs at Capital City’s other McDonald’s.
“Every single person is maintaining their position,” he said.
Capital City became the sole McDonald’s franchisee in Springfield last year when Kasprzyk purchased stores from two other franchise operators, Paul and Mary Breznay and Kim Derringer. He previously purchased six Springfield locations in 2024 when franchisee Brad Davis retired.
