SmallCakes Cupcakery & Creamery reopening Dec. 1

SmallCakes Cupcakery & Creamery is reopening Dec. 1 under new ownership.

The bakery at 2300 Wabash Ave. opened in 2018 but closed at the end of October after the landlord, Joyner Real Estate, filed an eviction notice against the previous franchisee.

“In the past, we had done some marketing for the business,” said new owner Andrew Bartlett, who also owns OOT Box Media, a full-service creative agency. “When everything was coming to an end, corporate reached out to me and we worked out a deal trying to save it,” he said.

SmallCakes specializes in freshly baked gourmet cupcakes, with a dozen signature flavors available daily plus rotating seasonal flavors. Following appearances on multiple seasons of the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” the company has expanded to more than 160 locations in 26 states, most owned by local franchisees. In addition to Springfield, SmallCakes has eight other Illinois locations, all in the Chicago area.

“SmallCakes has had a lot of support in the community, and we really want to give Springfield an experience when they walk in there,” said Bartlett. “We’ll also be bringing back some familiar faces.”

The first 100 customers on Friday will receive a free cupcake. Hours of operation will be 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12-5 p.m. on Sunday.
