Remarkable Resale in Rochester has changed its name, location and inventory over the past three decades, and now owner Kitty Boyce
is planning a change of ownership as well.
Boyce opened The Kids Closet, a children’s resale shop, in 1991. She quickly outgrew the
initial 1,000 square feet of space, and by 1994 moved into a 7,800-square-foot space across the street at
130 South John St. “The landlord built the building for me; we were out of space,” she said.
In 2009, the business name changed to Remarkable Resale to reflect the addition of adult clothes and home décor, and by 2021 children’s items were dropped from the inventory.
Boyce said that after 32 years,
she is making plans for retirement and intends
to move to the St. Louis area to be closer to her
daughter. “I had an unsuccessful back surgery last February and ended up in the hospital for 12
days,” Boyce said. “My daughter had to spend a lot of time up here and miss work, so I wanted to be closer to her in case anything happens again.”
Boyce is now seeking a buyer for the business, which she said will include the inventory, fixtures,
computer systems and website. She currently has four
full-time employees and two part-time and plans to keep the business
operational at least into March.
“The store
has been through a lot of
changes over the years… one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to the people who sell and shop with us. As
remarkable as this journey has been, the store is
ready for its next stage of growth,” Boyce said.
