Green View, the Peoria-based landscape company, is closing its Springfield retail center to focus on its growing landscape maintenance and design divisions.
June 13 will be the last day Green View will serve retail customers at its location at 3000 W. Jefferson St. The company will transition the Jefferson Street facility to provide more space for its landscape and maintenance teams.
“Green View has been in Springfield since 1980, and we are more committed to this market than ever,” said Tom Hoerr, Green View president and CEO. “This is not a step back. It is a reallocation of resources toward the work we are known for and the growth we are seeing.
“Our Springfield team is larger than it has ever been, and we are ready to take on more.”
Hoerr said demand for the company’s design, installation, and maintenance services has outpaced its current capacity at the Springfield facility, and the space, equipment and personnel at the garden center are needed to support that growth. He said the Springfield landscaping business has grown “exponentially,” and the company has hired four new salespeople for the division over the past 18 month.
In addition to Springfield, Green View, a family-owned firm that was founded in 1955, has operations in Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign and Decatur. None of the other Green View locations operate a retail center.
Green View’s main revenue stream always has been landscape design and installation, lawn care programs, and commercial grounds maintenance, with retail sales representing less than 10% of total sales, Hoerr said.
“Retail is not the core of our business,” he said.
Springfield is Green View’s largest market. The company has more than 30 employees locally, and all the retail center employees were offered the opportunity to transition to the landscape operations, Hoerr said.
