Shelly Roby founded her computer repair business in 1991 but opened her first brick-and-mortar location earlier this month at 426 South Grand Ave.
“I’ve been doing this since I was in high school,” said Roby. “I originally called the business Roby Computer Services and worked out of my house.”
Roby said about 12 years ago she renamed the company GeekGirl Technologies at the suggestion of her granddaughter, who now works with her in the business.
“She said the name wasn’t catchy enough and encouraged me to try to rebrand,” Roby said.
GeekGirl Technologies offers repairs and upgrades to hardware, custom-built computers, business systems and gaming systems in addition to maintenance for personal or business systems and virus removal.
“If it’s hardware-related with a computer or laptop, I do it,” Roby said. “And I guarantee my work; I take a lot of pride in that.” She said much of her business comes from referrals since she’s worked with so many people over the years.
She said when her landlord found out about her line of work, he encouraged her to look at office space he had available.
“I’m almost 60 years old, and I decided if I don’t take this option now, I’m never going to do it,” Roby said.
