Don Smith Paint Co. has come full circle, with former owner Richard Scott announcing plans to officially reopen the longtime business on MacArthur Boulevard later this week.

Scott operated the business from 1999 until 2019, when he sold it to Nate Tierney. However, Scott still owned the real estate at 1724 S. MacArthur Boulevard and leased the building to the new owner.

Don Smith Paint Co. closed abruptly in July, and Tierney declined comment when contacted by SBJ. Scott said he was able to work things out with the staff, who wanted to stay on.

“The stars aligned, and we’re going to get it reopened,” Scott said. “It’s a legacy; this is what I built, and I wanted it to continue.”

Scott said he is waiting on the corporate office to provide a few updates for the operating system but hopes officially open later this week. He is not affiliated with the Carlinville or Bloomington locations, which remain closed.

Chris Day and Jordan Day serve as the managers, while Lilly Weidler and Stacey Boll are color consultants.

“We’ve got a great crew here, and we’re ready to open up and service people,” said Scott.

  1. Welcome Back to The Boulevard. Two independent paint/decorating businesses located just a few hundred paint stirers distant from each other is great for the neighborhood and
a gift to professionals, confidant DIY-ers and honey-doers.

  2. I am so happy Don Smith is reopening! I was devastated when they closed as I have been a customer for over 20 years. And all the staff have always been very accommodating and answered any questions I may have. Sure miss your longtime employee, Steve, may he RIP.
