Local franchise owners Marcus and Lauryn McGlasson are opening a third Springfield Scooters Coffee location on Sangamon Avenue.
The McGlassons have purchased the former PNC Bank building at 1949 E. Sangamon Ave. and plan to retrofit it to become a Scooters Coffee shop. Lauryn McGlasson said they are expecting a quick turnaround on the building renovation and hope to be open by early 2027.
The footprint of the PNC property will allow the new Scooters to have two or three drive-through lanes, McGlasson said, which will allow for designated lanes for mobile order pickups and Door Dash orders. In addition to coffee and other drinks, the Scooters also will serve breakfast sandwiches and baked goods.
“I’m excited to offer that end of town another quick breakfast option,” McGlasson said.
A Pleasant Plains resident, McGlasson said she’s often in the area around the Sangamon Avenue location because her kids play hockey at the Nelson Center Ice Rink on Fifth Street.
“There is a big need in that area,” she said. “People tell us — the north end doesn’t get anything new, so we were super excited about this location.”
This will be the couple’s ninth Scooters shop. In addition to the Scooters on Wabash Avenue and Clear Lake Avenue in Springfield, they own and operate locations in Chatham, Taylorville, Fairview Heights and Swansea, and in Indiana. They were first introduced to the brand when they went through a Scooters drive through while on vacation.
“We really liked it,” Lauryn McGlasson said. “I was a nurse at the time, which was during COVID, and I wanted a change of pace.” The McGlassons opened their first Scooters in Taylorville five years ago.
PNC closed its Sangamon Avenue branch in early 2024. It was one of 19 branches the bank closed nationwide at the same time.
The McGlassons, through an LLC named Whoa N Go Coffee, purchased the Sangamon Avenue building from the bank last month for $500,000, according to Sangamon County tax records.
