LLCC offering solar energy training at reduced cost

Lincoln Land Community College, in partnership with Wind Solar USA, is offering two, four-week solar energy classes this summer at a reduced price. The trainings will be offered in a hybrid format, each using online learning with one, hands-on lab held in the Workforce Careers Center on the LLCC-Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road.

“If you are interested in solar energy for your home or business, or are thinking of joining the solar workforce, these two classes will enhance your knowledge and give you a great start,” says Nancy Sweet, dean, LLCC Applied and Emerging Technologies.

Introduction to Photovoltaics will be held July 6-25. The lab session will take place Saturday, July 25 with a morning or afternoon session available. Participants will learn how photovoltaic (PV) systems work, diagram the four PV system types, describe and identify components, understand the best application and limitations of each system type, define the solar window, make energy efficiency recommendations, estimate system loads and understand the basics of PV site assessment. The cost is $75.

Solar Site Assessor will be held Aug. 3-22. Intro to Solar Photovoltaics, or an equivalent with documentation, is required to be taken before this course. The lab session will take place Saturday, Aug. 22 morning or afternoon. Participants learn how to perform a PV site assessment for a home or small business. The class will cover site assessment tools, load analysis, energy efficiency recommendations, array placement options, basic system sizing, cost estimates and evaluating exiting infrastructure on site. The cost is $225.
