The newest retail location for Mel-O-Cream Donuts is now open at 4411 Yucan Drive. Mel-O-Cream occupies 1,300 square feet on the west end of the strip center built by Joyner Construction Services earlier this year at the corner of Yucan Drive and Archer Elevator Road.
Springfield resident Amanda Crossland acquired the four existing retail locations in July 2019 from Chris Weihmeir. While COVID delayed her expansion plans, she began moving forward with a west-side Mel-O-Cream store at the beginning of this year. Crossland had originally hoped to have the new location operational by the summer, but said “construction and staffing, all the normal challenges,” ended up taking longer than planned.
A soft opening was held on Oct. 1, and Crossland said she plans to have a grand opening later this month that will also serve as a 90th anniversary celebration for Mel-O-Cream.
“We had a wonderful response to the soft launch, with over 200 orders that day,” Crossland said. “There’s been a lot of local excitement for the new store.” She said Mel-O-Cream offers 20 different varieties of donuts, in addition to premium coffee.
The Yucan Drive store has a drive-thru lane, and Crossland said she plans to add patio seating in the spring. Hours are 5:30 a.m.-noon, seven days a week.
The four other Mel-O-Cream stores are located at 217 E. Laurel St., 525 North Grand Ave E., 195 W. Monroe and 3010 S. Sixth St. in Springfield.
