The city of Bloomington recently announced the
appointment of Jeff Jurgens as its new city manager. Jurgens began his tenure
after taking the oath of office on May 6. A central
Illinois native, Jurgens brings a wealth of experience in municipal management
and a deep understanding of the region, having previously served as a partner
at Sorling Northrup law firm in Springfield.
During his time at Sorling Northrup, Jurgens represented several communities in the Springfield and central Illinois area, including
the villages of Chatham and Forsyth.
“I’m honored to serve as city manager of Bloomington, a city that is growing and has so much to offer,” said Jurgens. “Having
previously worked in Springfield, I am excited to bring my experience and
insights to this role and to work collaboratively with the city council, staff and residents.”
Bloomington has several transformative projects in the works, including a $25 million renovation of the Bloomington Public Library and the O’Neil Aquatics Center, slated to open later this month.
On May 7, the city celebrated the expansion of Ferrero, which launched its inaugural
North American chocolate factory in Bloomington.
“This monumental $75 million
venture underscores Bloomington’s allure as a hub for economic dynamism and
inventive endeavors,” Jurgens stated.
“The twin cities stand primed and open for business, with
a dynamic landscape ripe for growth and innovation,” said Patrick Hoban, president of the Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council. “In welcoming
Jeff Jurgens to his new role, we’re thrilled to highlight the myriad of
exciting opportunities awaiting us,” Hoban said.
“Bloomington boasts an impressive narrative, deeply
rooted in agriculture and insurance, with giants like State Farm, Country
Financial, Growmark and the Illinois Farm Bureau anchoring our economic
heritage,” Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe said. “Adding to this heritage we now have the
global presence and expansion of Ferrero in Bloomington, along with innovative
advancements at Rivian taking place next door in Normal. When you add all of
this with the regions outstanding educational institutions, health care
opportunities and the many other strong businesses growing and headquartered
here, this is truly a community on the rise.”
