The former Homestyle Café on North Ninth Street has reopened with a new name and ownership and expanded its hours of operation.

New owner Carolina “Carla” Chagala was already working at the restaurant at 1144 N. Ninth St. with brothers Oscar and Reyes Venture, who purchased it in June 2024. Chagala bought the business earlier this year and it temporarily closed for renovations.

“We did some remodeling with the electrical and work in the basement,” said manager Jesse Hay. The signage was also changed to reflect the new name, Richard’s Family Restaurant, after Chagala’s father.

Hay said the timing of the closure turned out to be fortuitous, since extensive road construction was taking place along North Ninth Street at the same time. “All that construction was happening at the same time we were closed, so that worked out,” he said.

The construction crews have now moved on to Eleventh Street, and Hay said the regulars have started to return. The extensive menu still focuses heavily on breakfast, although there are also plenty of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, salads, pastas, seafood, steak and even stir-fry. And now, there are even more options.

“It’s very similar to our old menu, but Carla has added some of her own authentic Mexican dishes,” Hay said.

In addition to breakfast and lunch, Richard’s Family Restaurant is now serving dinner.

“We’re doing a trial run right now to stay open in the evening,” Hay said. “We have a full dinner menu and specials every day.”

Current hours of operation are 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday.
