The Keep Store, Springfield's first refillery, has joined a growing list of downtown businesses that have announced closures over the past few weeks.

A July 12 Facebook post announced the business at 314 E. Adams St. had closed its doors for good. The statement from owners Ami and Mike Shelton noted they had considered relocating the business to the west side, but in the course of reviewing the financials "determined it was not in our long-term interests to keep pouring all our money, time and energy into this business."

The Keep Store opened in May 2022, offering eco-friendly products. Shelton told SBJ at the time that she had been interested in the environment and conservation since high school, but becoming a grandmother made her even more motivated to be concerned about the world she was leaving behind for future generations. The refillery offered bulk sales of home goods such as cleaning products, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and other hygiene items.

The statement from the owners also noted: "There is a markable difference in consumer spending since January, and the chaotic economy we have experienced this past year has, understandably, caused many to pull back on their spending... when we looked at the financials, removing the sunk cost, our emotions and our dedication to the cause, this was unfortunately the inevitable conclusion."

The Sheltons said equipment and supplies will be posted for sale and any remaining inventory will be donated to organizations in need.

"...we choose to focus on the difference we know we made together. Thank you to each and every one of you who spent your hard-earned dollars with us. We will continue to be champions for our brands, our small business community and our beloved downtown," the statement concluded.

The Keep Store is the fourth downtown business in less than three weeks to announce a closure. Jerk Shop Go announced its immediate closure on June 23, while Maryflor Mexican Restaurant announced earlier this month it will close permanently July 20. The Wakery - located just a few doors down from Maryflor - announced July 5 that it would close as of Aug. 10.
