RSM restructures Springfield office

RSM US, part of a global network of independent audit, tax and consulting firms, is keeping its Springfield office open but not necessarily all of its previous clients. Earlier this month, some individual and corporate clients received a letter from RSM which stated in part, “…due to the new tax reform legislation and related changes in our office structure to implement the new law, we do not feel we can continue serving you as a client in an efficient manner going forward.”

“What prompted the letter is we have some existing accounts that would have been a better fit for smaller firms,” said Mark Miskell, a partner with RSM’s Peoria office. “The letter was a recognition that some of the returns we did were a great fit for us 20 or 25 years ago, but as we went more into a business-focused firm we’ve shifted to middle market companies and their owners.” According to Miskell, the criteria is not as much about a company’s annual revenues as whether it has “multi-state or international operations, sophisticated filing issues or specialized service issues.”

“Our clients need someone with technical expertise beyond just filling out the forms,” said Miskell. “Companies that just need general compliance are a better fit for some of the smaller, local firms.”

According to Miskell, RSM’s central Illinois office serves clients between Interstate 80 and Interstate 70 with locations in Champaign, Galesburg and Peoria, in addition to Springfield. “We cover a huge area within central Illinois,” he said. “We don’t plan on leaving Springfield.”
