Matto Pizza Pies is firing up the ovens once again as it reopens Thursday in a new location.
Matto has relocated to the 3211 W. Iles Ave., in the building that formerly housed a Marco’s Pizza. Matto is owned by Dan and Nickey Sperry and Justin Richardson, the same team behind local restaurants Vele and Curate.
This is the team’s second time around for the Matto concept. They previously operated a Matto Pies and Pints at 2936 S. Sixth St., but that restaurant closed in October 2023 after less than a year in business. A social media post from Matto at the time said the location had “proven to be unsustainable,” citing ongoing battles with the landlord over problems with the building and a lack of parking.
The new iteration of Matto will offer pizza pickup and delivery, with no dine-in area. Nicky Sperry said Matto will have an abbreviated menu at the new location geared toward carry-out business. The menu will feature thin-crust pizzas as well as sourdough pizzas and calzones, using the sourdough recipe from the pizza at Capone’s Hideout in New Berlin.
Sperry said they chose the new location on the west side of Springfield in part due to the proximity to their other businesses.
“It’s very close to Vele and Curate, so there’s a little bit of neighborhood convenience to it,” she said. “And there are more homes on that side of Springfield. The move for Vele worked well, so we think it will be a good fit.”
Vele originally opened in downtown Springfield in 2017 and moved to its current location at 3241 W. Iles Ave. in 2020.
Marco’s Pizza closed its 3211 W. Iles restaurant in December 2024. It was the last location in Springfield for the Marco’s chain, which once had three Springfield restaurants.
Matto will be open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Monday and will be closed on Tuesdays.
