The Springfield City Council unanimously approved a new liquor license classification Jan. 6 that is designed to allow businesses to sell alcohol at the new SCHEELS Sports Park at Legacy Pointe.

The ordinance allows “restaurant licensees to sell alcoholic liquor at retail for consumption on the premises and will also allow the sale of” packaged beer, wine and alcoholic liquor for consumers to take home. Class P licenses “shall entitle the licensee(s) to sell alcoholic liquor at retail, by the drink, for consumption on the premises of a sports complex, including throughout the sports complex ground, such as all outdoor fields, courts, spectator areas and other designated locations.”

It’s the city’s latest permanent liquor license classification, and comes with a $1,000 annual fee. Ward 8 Ald. Erin Conley confirmed with corporation counsel Greg Moredock that the new classification is essentially for the new sports park and that alone.

“This is really just intended for the operator of the sports park with specific limits on how the sales can occur,” Conley said during the Jan. 6. council meeting.

Four other alcohol license classifications for large or niche venues have just one licensee each, including classifications for nightclubs and convention centers.

Scheels Sports Park held a soft opening on Dec. 12 in conjunction with the Midwest Open Indoor Archery Tournament. A grand opening for the full complex is planned for May.
