What is your guiding principle in life? I have three. As I was entering high school, a graduating senior told me, "Make friends with the lunch ladies" (presumably to get free cookies). In high school, my dad would tell me, "Every day is a battle." A priest I lived with in Kenya told me simply, "Do something really good with your life." Following these three principles ensures that I treat everyone with respect, that I am productive every day and that I do not let daily issues cloud the overall goal of being a good person.
What led you to your current career? In my early days of practicing law, I was drawn to municipal law because it was a way to positively impact the communities that I represented. An unexpected call from Mayor Misty Buscher led me to my current role.
What is your greatest hope for Springfield? Springfield is a historically significant community with wonderful assets. My greatest hope is that Springfield can market these assets and develop new, attractive employment options so that individuals look to live here and stay here.
What obstacles have you been able to overcome on your career path? Finding the appropriate work-life balance. There is always work to be done, and it is easy to allow this to dominate one's thoughts. It took me several years to be able to put work out of my mind and live in the present moment.
What do you wish your younger self had known when you started on this path? Not every case is a winner, even if the law is in your favor. What's the best purchase (under $100) you've made in the last six months? Callaway 3-wood (on sale). Bomb it down the fairway.
