Construction activity is evident outside the former Walgreens at 1155 N. Ninth St., and according to a building permit on file with the City of Springfield, the location is being converted to a Family Dollar store.
Mimi Hurwitz, a broker with Hurwitz Enterprises, is the listing agent for the property but told SBJ she was not involved in the transaction, noting that Walgreens corporate office sometimes arranges leases directly with other corporate offices.
The nearly 15,000-square-foot building was constructed in 2007 but has been vacant since February 2017, although the parking lot was used last year as a drive-thru COVID testing site.
Family Dollar operated a nearby location at 313 North Grand Avenue until closing that store in 2019 as part of a nationwide series of closures. The company was acquired by Dollar Tree in 2105. Family Dollar currently has four other locations in Springfield: 400 South Grand Ave. East, 921 W. Jefferson St., 1935 W. Monroe Street and 1425 E. Cook St.
