Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County will assume large item pickup service in April under a new agreement with the City of Springfield.
The Springfield City Council approved a contract for the service with Habitat for Humanity on March 21.
Lance Morgan, director of Habitat's ReStore, says the organization already has box trucks available to use for pickups, and any usable items will be sold at ReStore. Morgan says the large item pickup is an extension of ReStore's existing mission because it helps keep items out of the landfill. ReStore already keeps a dumpster on site to recycle metal items, he says.
"The city really believes in what we do," Morgan said.
Mark Mahoney, director of the city's Office of Public Works, says large item pickup helps keep those items from littering alleys and streets.
"It's a pretty popular program," he said.
Habitat will begin taking calls for large item pickup on April 3 and will begin picking up items on April 10.
